TWO HOURS LATER, MARCHAND RUSHED into the Emperor’s quarters. “Your Majesty, Dr. O’Meara is riding up—he’s under military escort.”

The Emperor flinched. An unforeseen casualty. “So we move from skirmishes to war. Let us see Lowe’s first move.”

He was sitting at his writing desk when Marchand brought O’Meara in. The British guards stood in the doorway, hats under their arms, faces curious. The doctor’s black hair was disheveled. He plucked at his clothes.

The Emperor willed the man to be strong. He kept his own face neutral, his voice in different. If his friendliness with the doctor were reported, it would taint O’Meara, perhaps brand him as a traitor. Far better the doctor return to England to plead for their release.

“Your Maj—” O’Meara took a deep breath. “General Bonaparte, I cannot continue to perform medical duties for you. The governor and I have . . . agreed . . . it’s best if I return to England.” He clicked his heels. “I wish you good health as . . . as a doctor, I would wish for any man.”

The Emperor inclined his head and retired to his bedroom.

There, Cipriani emerged from the shadows. “Not so bad, I’m thinking. Can’t deny a second doc’s reports of your illness, can they? Then, when—er, if—this slave thing collapses, we get home on sick leave.”

The Emperor leaned his back against a wall. “A fine man, O’Meara. I hope they don’t do him harm.” His eyes drooped closed. “Lowe’s not stupid. He’s banished an ally of mine as punishment for that article. I guarantee that’s not the end of the matter.” He kicked off his slippers. His feet didn’t look swollen. Perhaps his hourglass had not yet run out.
